Three Years After Losing Dad to Suicide

Jessica | December 27, 2014

Three years ago today, I lost my father to suicide.  As I write that I still feel this sense of disbelief as I question, "How could this have happened in my family?"  It still just doesn't seem real.  So much has happened in just three short years after losing dad to suicide. Being a survivor is now a part of my story.   It is not something I would have chosen to be a part of my story, but I suppose we do not always want the hand that is dealt ...

Depression vs. Slump

Becky | November 11, 2014

Lately, I’ve been wondering if there’s a difference between depression and “a slump.” After losing someone to suicide, I think it’s natural to become hyper-vigilant to ensure we don’t miss any warning signs from others. I am finding it hard to strike a balance between being mindful and being overly concerned about someone’s behavior. I mean, how can you really know? I also don’t want to become super-annoying to people if I repeatedly check in ...

Is Dying with Dignity Suicide?

Jessica | November 3, 2014

I recently moved and have spent the past couple days with my head buried in boxes.  I took a few minutes this evening to see what was going on outside the confines of my home.  It saddened me to see that, Brittany Maynard has ended her life.  As I read through the People article, "Terminally Ill Woman Brittany Maynard Has Ended Her Own Life," I couldn't help but think about my dad and his choice to end his own life.  I took some time to read ...

The Meaning of Suicide

Jessica | October 28, 2014

As human beings, we make assumptions on a regular basis.  When we walk outside and see dark clouds, we assume it is going to rain.  So, we grab an umbrella to protect us from getting wet.  Our assumptions are based on our own beliefs.  They are shaped by our past experiences.  They help us make sense out of this world.   While one might assume that assumptions can often make grief after suicide even more complicated as we survivors search for the ...

Suicide in the Media

Becky | October 15, 2014

Last Week, Becky wrote about "Dying with Dignity" in which she discussed suicide in the media. The story that I've read about most recently was the 29-year old, Brittany Maynard, who is terminally ill, and has decided to end her life on November 1st. It was all over my social media feed and was even discussed last week with my friend Megan, who is also a survivor of suicide.  As a survivor, it is difficult not to be impacted by suicide in the ...
